Amy Russell's Curious Web Page

So. Why a Website?

It just seemed like the cool thing to do.

I mean, everyone's doing it, right?

The simple (and honest) answer is that I wanted to provide information about myself to prospective employers and collaborators - something a little more dynamic than a CV.

I hope it serves that purpose.

Hey look! Bats!

Okay. How'd you do it?

Creating this website was, I must admit, incredibly simple. In fact, it was completely effortless:

I had my husbad do it.

The HTML for site was created from scratch, without an editor (that would be cheating) - which is why the source code looks the way it does. The CSS was assembled much the same way as the HTML - by trial and error. Mostly error. The slideshow on the index page is a modified version of a form-driven script whose origins are a little sketchy.

About the images

The photographs on this site were taken either with a Canon PowerShot A300 (a battery-devouring digital), or with my husband's indestructible Asahi Pentax K1000 - a camera that uses an archaic method of recording images called "flim" or something.

The background images are taken from various 19th century bat illustrations, as was the potbellied bat in the upper lefthand corner (manipulated with Photoshop to resemble an etching). Some of the images have been cropped, but otherwise minimally adjusted using Photoshop.

Other stuff

The font used for the page titles is a TrueType font based on the distinctive hand lettering of Edward Gorey called (surprise!) Gorey TTF, and can be found here. The font face for the body is Georgia, the menu is Hilversum, and the headers are Verdana.

The domain was registered with register.com, and hosted by Yahoo! Small Business.

The cat illustration in the lower righthand corner is from FLCL (a six-episode anime from 2000). His name is "Takkun" and if you mouse over him, you'll hear him talk. The "big fat kitty" is a reference to our dearly departed cat, Hecubus.

No electrons were hurt during the production of this website.

Don't you want a website now?

Pictures!

We've got a lot of pictures!

Pictures from various meetings, trips into the field, and, of course, vactation snapshots!

At some point I hope to find a place for them here, in the meantime you'll just have to enjoy what I've got uploaded. Like this picture of me in Colliersville, IL (just outside of St. Louis, MO), taken on the way to the Evolution Meeting in 2004. Its the world's largest catsup bottle!
